6.3 Syndicated Usage
Distributed Usage Logging (DUL) was an initiative sponsored by Crossref that provided a framework for publishers to capture usage of DOI-identified content items that occured on other websites. The premise behind DUL was that publishers could register a DUL usage logging end-point with Crossref, which was mapped to the publisher’s DOIs. A content site, such as a repository, could use a DOI to look up where the publisher wanted a transaction to be logged, then use the DUL message structure to log the activity.
The DUL project is no longer supported. Instead, COUNTER has produced Best Practice on Syndicated Usage.
